AQUEOUS HYBRID ION BATTERIES

GTC utilizes two different, yet state of the art Battery systems. The Aquion Battery Stack is a scalable system, that can be connected in series or parallel for a wide range of system configurations. It is made up of clean saltwater batteries that use Aquion's proprietary Aqueous Hybrid Ion (AHI™) technology and outperform and outlast traditional battery chemistries. The Aquion Battery Stack delivers robust field performance, maintenance-free operation, world-class safety (they're non-flammable and non-explosive), and excellent abuse tolerance, making them ideal for long-term, unsupervised daily cycling applications like off-grid solar, microgrids, and energy management and grid-scale services.

One of the most impressive features of the Aquion Battery Stack is its low environmental footprint. AHI batteries contain no heavy metals or toxic chemicals, and are the first batteries in the world to be Cradle to Cradle Certified™ Bronze - a prestigious quality mark recognized across industries as a mark of continuous improvement toward the development of sustainable products.

ZINC MANGANESE DIOXIDE

GTC also utilizes UEP's (Urban Electric Power) Zinc Manganese Dioxide battery technology. This system revolutionizes traditional single use alkaline chemistry, for rechargeable energy storage systems. With high energy density, long life and flexible performance ranging from 2-8 hours charge/discharge capabilities. Energy storage must be easy to site, inexpensive, and durable. To date only Aquion technology has emerged as a universal solution. That is, until now.

The UEP technology concept was originally funded under the competitive Department Of Energy ARPA-E GRIDS program in 2009 and was based on research being conducted at the CUNY Energy Institute under the guidance of distinguished Professor Sanjoy Banerjee.  UEP was formed in January 2013 to license the technology and commercialize the battery product to bring to market. UEP’s battery systems are modular and scale to meet every stationary energy storage need, from residential to commercial to grid.

CHEMISTRY

UEP’s zinc-manganese dioxide (Zn-MnO2) battery technology utilizes the same material as primary alkaline batteries, like the standard double AA. Revolutionizing the chemistry into rechargeable systems with high energy density and long cycle life.

SAFETY

Zn-MnO2 batteries use safe, non-toxic materials without lead, other heavy metals, or flammable electrolytes. They are recycled using similar processes developed for primary alkaline batteries.

OPERATIONS

UEP is scaling up production with a pilot manufacturing line in the previous Pfizer campus of Pearl River, NY - revitalizing jobs and manufacturing efforts in the Mid-Hudson Valley for US installations and exports across the globe. GTC will always use and support American suppliers and materials where possible.
